Types of Patio Door Locks
There are two main types of patio doors, standard and sliding. When looking for a new patio door lock it is therefore important to find a lock which will work with the door type.
Standard Door Locks
It would have a standard hinged patio door then any of the below locks should be compatible, as long as you choose one that will fit the lock opening.
Sliding Door Locks
Due to the opening mechanism of a sliding door a usual deadbolt or multipoint lock won’t secure the door. Instead you will need a hookbolt lock which will stop a sliding door from opening.
How Secure Are Patio Locks
Patio door locks can vary on the security benefits so it’s worth doing your research if having a high security lock is high on your agenda. For higher security levels we would suggest choosing a multipoint lock, which have multiple locking points making your door harder to break into.
How To Change Patio Door Locks
Changing the patio lock will depend on the type of lock you have purchased. If its a standard deadbolt lock then the following instructions can be used:
- Open the door and remove the handle and spindle.
- Remove the lock, these will usually be screwed in place on the faceplate surrounding the bolt.
- Replace the old lock with the new and screw in place.
- Reattach the handle and spindle.
Before any lock installation we would recommend reading the manufacturers instructions in order to make sure that the lock is installed properly and will work to full effect.
How To Adjust Locks On A Sliding Patio Door
If you have a sliding patio door you may realise that there’s a bit of give on the door when locked. If this is the case you will want to adjust the lock in order for your door to be as secure as possible.
This occurs due to the final positioning of the hookbolt not being correct. This can be adjusted using the following instructions:
- Open the sliding door so you can see the locking mechanism.
- Whilst open move the key to the locked position, you should be able to see the hookbolt.
- Directly above the hookbolt there should be a screw which can be used to adjust the positioning of the hookbolt.
