What Is Lock Snapping
Lock snapping is a technique in which an intruder will break, or snap, the cylinder in order to gain access to the locking mechanism and then open the lock. The technique usually takes 5-10 seconds and doesn’t require any specialist tools, which has meant that the technique has become popular among burglars across the UK.
Difference Between Anti Snap and Standard Cylinders
When looking at lock snapping the most important thing to recognise is where the weak point of the lock cylinder is. This is where the lock will snap when an intruder tries the lock snapping technique.
On a standard cylinder this weak point is at the centre of the lock where the locking mechanism is. This means that when the lock is snapped the locking mechanism is exposed giving access to intruders so that they can easily bypass the locking mechanism.
The anti snap cylinder have what is known as a sacrificial snap line. This is a weak point purposely put into the lock so that when the lock snapping technique is tried on the cylinder the lock snaps at a point where the locking mechanism isn’t affected and the would be intruder can’t easily gain access to your property.
