Common Uses Of Roller Shutters

Roller shutters are used in order to provide a high level of security to all types of properties. However they are most commonly found on commercial properties due to their higher security needs and are often found on shop fronts and office entrances.

Types Of Roller Shutter Security

There are two main types of roller shutter security products currently available: roller shutter locks and bullet door locks.

Roller Shutter Locks

These locks are fitted to the roller shutter in order to secure the shutter to the floor. They usually consist of an L shaped bracket which can be locked to the corresponding part which is fixed to the floor.

Depending on the type of roller shutter you have, you may benefit from having two roller shutter locks installed, one at both sides of the bottom of the shutter.

Bullet Door Locks

Bullet door locks are fitted to the guide rails of the roller shutter and once engaged stop the shutter from being opened. These are different to other common types of locks as they are made up of a sprung locking key which is operated by the key. This gives the shutter doors an extra level of security, with these types of locks being hard to break in to.

How To Fit Roller Shutter Locks

Before attempting any lock fitting we would highly recommend reading any documentation which comes with the lock in order to ensure that it’s fitted correctly and will work as intended.

Standard L bracket roller shutter locks are fairly easy to install and you will find that they are easy enough to install yourself. Here are the basic steps for fitting:

  1. Decide which side of the shutter is most appropriate for the lock and mark drill holes for the lock ensuring the L bracket allows clearance for the shutter to fully close
  2. Drill holes in the shutter and attach the L bracket, using the bolts provided.
  3. Most ground tubes will need to be concreted in place. Mark where the anchor needs to be placed and make a hole in the ground for the ground tube to be concreted in place.
  4. Once the concrete has been added we would recommend keeping the locking the door until the concrete is fully set in order to ensure that the ground tube stays in a position where it can be locked in the future.
